Supply List
For the first day of class, please come prepared with:
Warm earth oil color (burst sienna, etc.), titanium white, palette, small liner (round) brush (Dan Smith round #12 is good), sheet of canvas paper taped to board.
We review all the supplies below on the first day of class, and I can answer any questions you may have if you want to wait before purchasing some of them.
OIL PAINT COLORS - Required, Basic Palette:
- Warm earth colors (choose at least one of the following): Burnt Sienna, Indian Red, Venetian Red, Italian Pink, Transparent Brown Oxide)
- Cadmium Red Light or Medium
- Cadmium Orange
- Cadmium Yellow Light
- Sap Green
- Terre Verte
- Phthalo Green
- Ultramarine Blue
- Phthalo Blue
- Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Red/Magenta
- Yellow Ochre/Italian Yellow/Mars Yellow
- Purple Lake/Windsor Violet/Mars Violet
- Titanium White (large tube)
- Zinc White
You may need to buy additional tubes of paint as we go through the course.
TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES:
- Medium-size palette knife (curved/ bent handle, not straight—2 – 3", diamond-shaped blade)
- Plastic triangle (medium) or plastic straight-edge
- Oil brushes—get an assortment, some large/medium/small; rounds/filberts—1/4" – 1"
- (Buy at least 4, make sure they are oil brushes – heavier bristle brushes that can hold the weight of oils— not watercolor brushes)
- *Palette—It is crucial to have a large enough space for mixing. Glass is best, at least 18 x 24" recommended, if the glass is thin it can be backed by board and taped around the edges. A small/crowded palette is a major hindrance to your ability to work (Perkins glass on Broadway is good for this, ¼ inch, sanded edges).
- Razor blade scraper (window scraper)—to clean palette
- Odorless paint thinner (turpentine) only! (Turpenoid or Gamsol preferred)
- Linseed oil, (small bottle)
- Glass jars with lids for turps (larger jar) and medium (smaller jar) – the best is to get the little plastic squeeze bottles with pointed tip, and a small funnel for filling.
- Rags
- Sandpaper (fine, a couple sheets)
- Disposable latex or vinyl gloves
- Plastic palette box with lid, for preservation of paint (doesn’t need to be large, mixing is done on your palette; this can just be used to store extra, unused paint for the next class. Long/flat Tupperware box works fine)
SURFACES:
We work on several smaller studies (8-10) on canvas paper. For this you need:
- Pad of pre-primed canvas paper (11 x 14", or 12 x 16" – the thicker the better)
- Gesso—white, large jug (for preparing surfaces)
- Masking tape/ thick white artist’s tape
- Drawing board/Masonite board (larger than your paper)
- Utility brush (at least 3", cheap hardware brush)
For pre-primed canvas paper, I suggest applying at least 2 additional layers of gesso. To prepare: place sheet of canvas paper on board and tape down all the way around the edges of the paper, to avoid buckling. Apply at least 2 smooth layers of gesso with utility brush, lightly sanding in-between.
We also work on 2 larger/more extended paintings on stretched canvas. I strongly encourage you to stretch and prepare your own (I provide a demo for those of you who are unfamiliar with the process). Preparing your own surfaces requires: gesso, canvas, wood stretcher bars, staples, staple gun & canvas pliers.
Suggested canvas sizes for extended studies:
- 1 medium-sized canvas, 16 x 20" or larger
- 1 larger canvas, 28 x 32" or larger
