Supply List
Please come prepared with the following for the first day of class:
- Surface: 1 sheet of prepared canvas paper, mounted to board (taped all the way around the edges)
-
All materials listed below
Oil Paint Colors:
Required Palette:
- Cadmium red medium
-
Cadmium orange
-
Cadmium yellow light
-
Pthalo green
-
Pthalo blue
-
Ultramarine blue
-
Alizarin crimson or quinacridone red
-
Purple lake or dioxazine purple
-
* White, titanium or mixed (titanium + zinc) – large tube
Other colors, nice to have:
- Yellow ochre
-
Sap green
-
Quinacridone violet
Buy the above
oil paints in Utrecht, Gamblin, Daniel Smith Artists’ Materials (they no longer make the cadmiums), Winsor & Newton (NOT Winton), Williamsburg, or Old Holland brands. Avoid pigments with the word “hue” following the name—they are cheaper because they contain very little of the actual pigment you want. You may need to buy additional tubes of the above paint as we go through the course.
Tools and Accessories:
- Medium-size palette knife (curved/bent handle, not straight—2" – 3")
-
Oil brushes—get an assortment, some large/medium/small, rounds/filberts: 1/4" – 1.5" (at least 4, inexpensive, synthetic is fine – make sure they are oil brushes – heavier bristle brushes that can hold the weight of oils – not watercolor brushes)
-
Palette—(glass is best, and the larger the better for mixing, at least 16" x 18" recommended, if the glass is thin it can be backed by board and taped around the edges) (Perkins glass on Broadway is good for this, ¼ inch, sanded edges)
-
Razor blade scraper (window scraper)—to clean palette
-
Odorless paint thinner (turpentine) only! (“Turpenoid” or “Gamsol” preferred)
-
Linseed oil (small bottle)
-
Glass jar with lid for turps (larger) and oil (smaller)- best option is to get little plastic squeeze bottles with pointed tip, and small funnel for filling.
-
Rags
Optional, but very nice to have:
- Disposable latex or vinyl gloves
-
Plastic palette box with lid, for preservation of paint (doesn’t need to be large – you mix on your palette – this can just be used to store extra, unused paint for the next class)
Set-Up:
- 3 pieces of foam-core or cardboard (at least ¼” thick), all cut to equal size, around 12" or 14" square (the exact size is not crucial, just as long as the 3 pieces are the same, we tape these together on the first day, so please have them pre-cut)
-
Packet of assorted colored artists paper/construction paper
-
Masking tape
-
Scissors/Xacto knife
-
Glue Stick
**Highly Recommended: Your own individual, small, free-standing desk lamp or clamp light with adjustable/ moveable neck. Label clearly with your name.
Surfaces:
- Pre-primed canvas paper pad (16 x 20" or 18 x 24") – the thicker the better.
-
Drawing board at least as big as the above, for mounting the paper.
-
White artist’s tape or masking tape
-
Gesso—white, medium sized jug
-
Medium/fine sandpaper
-
Canvas paper will be used for short and extended studies. Please come to every class with a prepared sheet – I recommend adding at lease 2 additional layers of gesso, sanding lightly in-between.
-
For our final, 4-session painting I recommend stretched canvas, measuring around 18 x 24", or 20 x 24"
I encourage you to stretch and prepare your own surface for the final painting (I demonstrate this process for those unfamiliar).
Preparing your own surfaces requires:
- Gesso
-
Canvas
-
Wood stretcher bars
-
Staples
-
Staple gun
-
Canvas pliers
