Instructions for Toning Grounds
Using acrylic paint
Dilute the paint mixture with water and mix thoroughly until it fells like buttermilk to heavy cream. Use a wide, soft brush to apply in even long strokes across the narrow width with the brush tip at a low angle to the canvas surface, moving from from one side across to the opposite edge. The diluted paint will begin to dry rapidly, so avoid re-touching the semi-wet surface with more paint (you can always re-coat after the paint is completely dry for a stronger color/even layer). This ground takes 2-4 hours to dry completely.
Using oil paint
Dilute the paint color mixture with odorless mineral spirits and mix thoroughly with a palette knife until it feels like heavy cream. Use a wide, soft brush to apply in even long strokes across the narrow width with the brush tip at a low angle to the canvas surface, moving from from one side across to the opposite edge. (Paint should not drip or seem to separate, this means you have added too much solvent!) Oil-toned grounds can take 7 days to 2 weeks to dry when additional linseed oil is mixed with the paint and solvent mixture, so plan ahead!
Toned Ground
Neutral gray ground (required for the first class)
Mix black and white pigments to a mid-value gray, adding a touch of yellow ochre to create a warm greenish or “putty” gray color. Apply paint evenly, including sides of stretched canvases.
