P10100 | LUMINOUS COLOR ON TONED GROUNDS: LANDSCAPE

Supply List

This quarter begins with an exploration of how optical color effects can be used by a painter to generate stunning color effects when painting sky, water and land.  To prepare for this class, review the materials list below:

  Black
Ivory black, Mars or Lamp black

  White
Titanium white and Zinc white
or Flake white or Flake White hue (Windsor and Newton)

Pigments marked with an asterisk (*) indicate useful colors for a basic palette, otherwise choose only one warm and cool pigment of each primary color (R, Y, B, G) from  the following list:

  Cool Yellow
Warm Yellow   Cool Red   Warm Red   Earth Reds   Cool Green   Warm Green
* Sap Green or Sap Green Lake Extra (Old Holland)

Cool Blue   Warm Blue   Violets    Other Materials   Palette   Brushes
(RECOMMENDED: inexpensive synthetic oil brushes)   Prepared Grounds
11 x 14" (min size) canvas panels, prepared watercolor paper or stretched canvas. Re-gesso with 3 coats for best surface.

  Instructions for Toning Grounds
Using acrylic paint
Dilute the paint mixture with water and mix thoroughly until it fells like buttermilk to heavy cream. Use a wide, soft brush to apply in even long strokes across the narrow width with the brush tip at a low angle to the canvas surface, moving from from one side across to the opposite edge. The diluted paint will begin to dry rapidly, so avoid re-touching the semi-wet surface with more paint (you can always re-coat after the paint is completely dry for a stronger color/even layer). This ground takes 2-4 hours to dry completely.

  Using oil paint
Dilute the paint color mixture with odorless mineral spirits and mix thoroughly with a palette knife until it feels like heavy cream. Use a wide, soft brush to apply in even long strokes across the narrow width with the brush tip at a low angle to the canvas surface, moving from from one side across to the opposite edge. (Paint should not drip or seem to separate, this means you have added too much solvent!)  Oil-toned grounds can take 7 days to 2 weeks to dry when additional linseed oil is mixed with the paint and solvent mixture, so plan ahead!

  Toned Grounds
Orange ground (required for first class)
Choose from any warm orange pigment (cad orange plus some burnt sienna) or mix red + yellow to create an orangey pigment which is thinned with solvent (or solvent plus oil) as needed to create a semi-transparent stain of color over the white ground.

  Cool gray ground
Mix black and white pigments to a mid-value gray, adding a touch of yellow ochre to create a warm greenish or “putty” gray color. Apply paint evenly, including sides of stretched canvases.

  Straw Yellow
Mix together yellow ochre plus raw umber to a dull straw-like color, apply thinly in an even stain of color.
