Supply List
Some of the supplies below (*) can be purchased from the instructor. Please let me know ahead of time (kmckeehen@centurytel.net) if you want to use this option.
- Pencils: 2 H, HB
-
*Burnisher ($1.00)
-
Ruler or dividers (or stick—free from instructor)
-
Kneadable eraser
-
Gator board or masonite watercolor board (if using a watercolor block instead of separate paper, no board is needed).
-
*Arches 140-lb. hot press watercolor paper
-
Brushes:
Should be good-quality Kolinsky sable—I recommend the following but if you already have something that comes to a fine point and has a full “belly,” it will probably be fine. There are also other good brands: D. Smith, Isabey, etc.
- #3 brush: Either the Da Vinci Maestro 35 or the Winsor & Newton Series 7 are the ones I use.
-
#1 or #0 brush: Winsor & Newton Series 7 or other good quality sable brush OR a well-made, sharp synthetic brush. The tip on this will probably curl sooner rather than later, but some are quite decent and will last a while, at a low price.
- Tracing paper—8 ˝ x 11" is big enough; smooth is better than ripply. Canson works.
-
*Drafting tape (Scotch #230) can be purchased in small amount from instructor for $1.00.
-
*Kraft tape can be purchased in small amount from instructor for $1.00
-
2 water containers—large yoghurt containers or mason jars work well
-
Paper towels or cotton rags
-
Soft brush or feather for sweeping erasings and other farfels off paper!
-
Palette: (if not purchasing prepared palette above) should have mixing wells with flat space for mixing
-
Paints:
*You can purchase a small palette with needed colors from instructor for $7.00. We should be able to come up with a selection of colors that work for your subject in class.
OR purchase & bring your own colors.
- Cadmium yellow pale and Scarlet Lake or Cadmium scarlet if your subject has warm reds/yellow/oranges. Add Alizarin crimson for cooler reds, WN Lemon yellow for cooler yellow.
-
A green and orange squash? Oxide of chromium for a green base (or French ultramarine + cadmium yellow pale), and some of above yellows/reds.
E-MAIL ME (kmckeehen@centurytel.net) if you are at all uncertain as to the colors your subject might require. We can always put together a palette of colors in class that works for you.-
Subject:
Bumpy gourds or squashes are good subjects; more finicky but also good are the colored corns. If you have already done some botanical drawing and know how to do double transfers, you can get a head start by drawing your preliminary sketch and transferring it to your mounted watercolor paper.
