Featured Event: The Necessity of Ruins: Contemporary Northwest Cityscape Painting Friday, May 2, 7:00pm, FREE Listen as a panel of artists featured in the concurring Cityscape exhibition (see below) discuss their cityscape paintings, their work in relation to the evolution of “the picturesque” and how the decisions they make as artists affect the way the general public sees their world. |

ArtTalk Series: High Brow/Low Brow with Joseph Park Thursday, May 8, 12:30pm-2:00pm, FREE Join Gage Artistic Director Gary Faigin as he interviews Joseph Park, a masterful draughtsman whose work features highbrow and lowbrow references, unexpected juxtapositions and a dramatic treatment of light. Hear Park speak about his skillful paintings and the way he includes creative references to contemporary culture and art masterpieces. |

Artist’s Tool Kit Series: Artists’ Copyright Thursday, May 15, 12:30pm-2:00pm, FREE Katherine Hendricks, a lawyer at Hendricks & Lewis, addresses the issues inherent in the intellectual property of art including reproduction rights and copyright issues. |

Friday Critique: with Geoff Flack Friday, May 30, 7:30pm-9:30pm, FREE Artists of all levels are invited to bring artwork to the Gage studios for review by a member of the faculty. This month, Geoff Flack leads thoughtful critiques and lively discussions. |

TAS Gets Fashionable in May Friday nights, 6:30-9:30pm, FREE Teen artists ages 13 to 18 are invited to this weekly art center each Friday. In May, teens work with instructor Marianne Goldin on Fashion Illustration, learning how to use ink, watercolor, pencil and specialty media to create innovative and balanced compositions. Teen works created during May will be on display at SAM’s teen exhibition space, June 13 through July 6. |

Save the Date: Best of Gage: Student Art Exhibit & Awards Friday, June 20, 6:00pm-9:00pm, FREE Mark your calendars: Friday, June 20 is a big day at Gage! That evening the school will rock with energy and artistry as hundreds enjoy the artwork of Gage students lining the halls of all three floors of the school. Guest Billy Howard of Howard House Gallery will judge the competition, picking the First, Second and Third Place Winners in seven categories — as well as the Grand Prize for Best in Show! |

Coming Soon to the Steele Gallery: Making Our Way: Installation & Performance Barbara Fugate May 16 – June 13 Unveiling and Opening Reception, Friday, May 16, 6:00pm-8:00pm, Performance at 7:00pm Inspired by Greco-Roman friezes and Renaissance frescos, Making Our Way is a processional of figures representing our human movement choosing possibility and optimism over suspicion and fear. Barbara Fugate draws these images directly on the Steele Gallery walls, from floor to ceiling, crowding the space with a parade of impassioned people expressing transformation, possibility and change. |

Gage instructor Jane Richlovsky’s work recycles discarded consumer goods, medical equipment into works of art. |

Portraits Sought for National Portrait Gallery Competition The National Portrait Gallery is seeking submissions for the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. Entries will be accepted online from June 2 through July 31. The first prize is $25,000, and the top 50 to 60 portraits will comprise a major exhibition opening in October 2009. |
