We're celebrating 20 years of the creative power of art-making to transform lives and build community as we raise funds to support Youth Programs and the Annual Fund. The evening promises to be a rollicking bash within the spectacular interior of St. Mark's Cathedral. Come as Cassanova, don your domino, or fashion your disguise from masks at our on-site Mercato di Carnevale.

Chiyo Ishikawa, Susan Brotman Deputy Director for Art and Curator of European Painting & Sculpture at the Seattle Art Museum, presents an overview of the exhibition Michelangelo Public and Private: Drawings for the Sistine Chapel and Other Treasures from the Casa Buonarroti, which runs from Oct. 15, 2009 - Jan. 31, 2010.

Norman Lundin

Painter Norman Lundin discusses his figurative, still-life and landscape paintings. Lundin's 40+ year career has produced a body of work notable for its focus and characteristic mood. His composite studio interiors, interacting in intriguing ways with convincing envisioned landscapes, use light and negative space as the major actors in quiet dramas. Lundin talks about his working process and the way he plays off the relationship between pictorial reality and pictorial fiction.

Familiarity and Strangeness: Working with History and the Imaginary with Claire Cowie

Multimedia artist Claire Cowie speaks about her materials, process and sources. Working in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture, she shows examples of works in progress and discusses her references and the intermingling of historical and artistic sources used in her concurrent exhibition.

Winsor & Newton representative Christine Hanlon answers questions, demonstrates products and gives out samples of W&N's line of Artist Oil Colour and Artisan water-mixable oils. Attendees receive a sampling of professional color and a medium.
 
  Drawing Jam Set for Saturday, December 5

Mark your calendars to reserve Saturday, December 5, for the Gage Academy of Art 10th Annual Drawing Jam. From 10:00am to 10:00pm, this art-making marathon features live models, tasty treats and lots of drawing materials. Kids will have a room of their own to draw, paint and craft during the day, and teens will also have their own dedicated studio for all 12 hours of the event. The event is just $10 for adults and free for kids and teens.

Let it Flow with Watercolors, with Nate Herth

Fridays, 6:30pm - 9:30pm/Ages 13 - 18/FREE
All materials provided. All levels welcome.

In the watercolor studio, practice brush techniques and color mixing while letting the nature of water play an important part. Paint from complex forms, compositions and structures, and create intricate patterns by layering and experimenting with the translucency and vibrancy of color. With balance and patience, discover the looseness and precision of watercolor.

  Gage 20th Anniversary Retrospective

Friends old and new are invited to contribute Gage photos, keepsakes, notes and memorabilia collected through the years for inclusion in the upcoming January/February retrospective exhibition commemorating the 20th anniversary of Gage Academy of Art. If you have Gage historical materials to lend for the exhibition, please contact Lauren Klenow by e-mail, or by phone at 206.323.4243.
 
  Parking at Gage
St. Mark's Cathedral is hosting some upcoming events that will impact parking at Gage. They ask that Gage students utilize street parking on the following dates and times:
  • Friday, October 9, after 4:30pm:
    St. Mark's annual fundraiser
  • Tuesday, October 13th, after 6pm:
    Author Mitch Albom speaks
  • Monday, November 9th, after 6pm:
    St. Mark's hosts an evening concert
Street parking is available on 10th Ave. north and south of Gage.

Refracting Space

This group exhibition features painters and printmakers who simultaneously use abstraction and representation to render their subjects and landscapes. These artists create compelling depths of space by merging their foreground and background and through the continual process of mark-making. Exhibiting artists include Eric Elliott, Kevin Fletcher, Ann Gale, Margie Livingston, Ryan Molenkamp and Matthew Olds.

Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth:
A Solo Exhibit by Claire Cowie

October 14 - November 14
Artists' Reception: Friday, October 16,
6:00pm-8:00pm, FREE

Cowie's series of ink drawings depict turmoil, grief, regret, fear and anxiety; address a conflicted sense of morality; and reference war, cognitive dissonance and environmental decline. Inspired by expansive sources, her imagery includes war photography, children's wartime drawings, current events, the Bible, Indian miniatures, Chinese scroll painting and works by a range of artists. Don't miss the concurring guest lecture by Cowie on October 16.

Gedye's solo show, Edge of Light, features more than 20 oil paintings of familiar and favorite Northwest places (Green Lake, Discovery Park, the North Cascades, the hills over Port Angeles), graced with the transitional light at the beginning and end of day. The Oct. 10 reception features live cello music; Gedye will attend both receptions.

Deanna Pindell creates her room-sized installation Journey: Metaphors and Metamorphosis. The abstracted figures and forms range up to 8' in height and are created from encaustic over paper mache. The installation evokes the journey from life into afterlife, balancing Seussian playfulness with meditative calm.
