Contemporary Egg Tempera Painting

Nathan DiPietro received his BFA from Central Washington University in 2003. His work has been featured in group shows at the Museum of Northwest Art, La Conner, WA; The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA; Western Oregon University, Monmouth, OR; and Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA; as well as in galleries in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York, North Carolina, and Texas. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, Art LTD, The Seattle Times, and The Stranger. He has been the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, Neddy Artist Award in painting, two Art 4Culture Special Project Grants, and an Artist Trust GAP Grant. The artist is represented in Seattle by Woodside/Braseth Gallery.

These supplies provided with materials fee of $55 as wells as an access to dry pigments during class:

  • 11×14 true gessoed panel
  • cosmetic sponges
  • medium container
  • eye dropper
  • squirt bottle
  • eggs!

Students are still responsible for the supply list below:

    • water color brushes: I recommend Windsor and Newton Cotman brand round synthetic. Please bring a range of round brushes. Sizes 0,2,4,6, and a larger 14 are recommended
    • nickel plated palette knife: I recommend Blick #132
    • old glass picture frame: Anything between 18×24 and 11×14 will work. I found mine at a thrift store for $5
    • old toothbrush
    • roll of paper towels
    • paint scraper
    • 2 old coffee cups or small mason jars
    • hair dryer
    • apron
    • brush cleaning soap
Experience the ancient medium of egg tempera — updated for the contemporary painter. We’ll work on cross-hatching, scumbling, and glazing as well as panel preparation, traditional gesso, paint making, and varnish to cultivate our painting method. Students will have the option of following along with the instructor to create a Andrew Wyeth inspired landscape painting or work on their own project.
