Portrait Painting

Aron Hart is an award-winning artist and art instructor, living in the Seattle area.  He specializes in oil paintings and drawings.  Dedicated to learning, Aron has continued to develop his skills over the years, studying locally and abroad, and most recently completing three years in the Drawing and Painting Atelier program at Gage Academy of Art.

  • 2 – 11”x 14” Canvas panels or stretched canvas toned with a neutral gray ground
  • Paint:
    • Flake or Cremitz White
    • Naples Yellow Light
    • Yellow Ochre
    • English Red
    • Cadmium Red Light
    • Alizarin Crimson
    • Burnt Sienna
    • Burnt Umber
    • Raw Umber
    • Green Earth or Terre Verte
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Ivory Black
  • You can bring in your favorite brushes to work with, but in case you need to purchase some here is what I suggest to start with:
    • 2 or 3 each of #2, 4, 6, & 8 filbert bristle brushes
    • 2 or 3 each of #2, 4 & 6 filbert synthetic brushes
    • 1 or 2 each of #4 or #6 round synthetic
    • * A very good round is the #4 Escoda Modernisia
  • Sketch pad and pencil for thumbnail studies and notes
  • Palette (glass or wooden, be sure the wooden palette is sealed)
  • Maul Stick* *(optional but very handy)
  • 2 trowel shaped palette knifes (Dick Blick style #44 is a good size)
  • Clean absorbent rags
  • Paper towels
  • Refined Linseed oil
  • OMS – Odorless Mineral Sprits (Gamsol is preferred)
  • 1 jar with lid for solvent
  • 1 small jar with lid for medium
  • Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal* *(optional to store and transport a wet palette)
 
Working from portrait models, you study the essential techniques and concepts of proportion, line, value, volume, structure and composition. You focus on the basic concepts of drawing applied to the human form and learn to think visually, translating what you see into a compelling portrait using simple techniques.
