Landscape Painting: Spring Trees w/Kathleen Moore

Kathleen Moore is a visual artist who paints with oil colors or soft pastel to capture moments of awe, from vast, stormy skyscapes to the intimate amazement by a single flower. “The natural world,” Moore explains, “has an overwhelming power to make you stop and and reconsider your position and role on the planet. I paint to record a sensation of interconnectedness and fragility of life. This is why the arts are so important, they serve as reminders that we are at once greater, and lesser, than we believe.”

Challenging belief, or what we believe we see, is a recurring theme in the classes and workshops Moore teaches. “I’m like a fitness coach,” Moore chuckles, “I get students moving with exercises to build their skills in drawing and painting, then we do the “yoga” part where students learn to stretch how and what they perceive.”

Originally from Texas, Moore has lived in the Seattle area since 1990. She received her BA in art from West Texas A&M University then continued her study of painting at Bruchion School in Los Angeles, CA and Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, WA.

Kathleen Moore is a teaching artist at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle where she teaches beginning drawing and landscape painting. Moore delights in encouraging people to draw in outreach projects at Gage, such as Pop-up Drawing Jams and Drink & Draw events.

  • It is very important that you use professional artist quality paints. Student-grade paint may look like a bargain but it has less pigment and more filler than professional quality paint.Artist’s Colors NOT student-grade paints – oil or acrylic:
    • White – titanium or titanium/zinc mix
    • Nickel titanite yellow also known as titanite yellow (Golden Acrylics makes this color)
    • Cadmium yellow light
    • Yellow ochre
    • Burnt umber
    • Cadmium red light
    • Alizarin crimson permanent
    • Ultramarine blue
    • Cerulean blue
  • Painting medium:
    • For oils: my favorite is Gamblin Galkyd Gel Medium – gel form in tube
    • For acrylics: slow dry acrylic medium
  • Soft Brushes

  • House painting brush –2” or 3”
  • Palette—HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is Masterson Sta-Wet Palette Seal Box with disposable pallet paper 12×16 inch. Please do not purchase small, oval palettes.
  • Small jar with lid
  • Pencils for sketching
  • 1 piece chalk or white pastel
  • Plastic sheet protectors for your reference photos
  • 1 black dry erase marker
  • Sandpaper – 150 grit – one or two sheets


  • Gesso for additional canvas prep – 8 oz. acrylic gesso
  • Vinyl disposable gloves (find at drugstore)

PLEIN AIR SUPPLIES: When painting outdoors, you will need a folding/easy to carry easel, a small folding stool, a bag or rolling cart to carry your supplies, and a way to transport wet canvases (Guerrilla Painter Handy Porters are my favorite). Additionally you will need to protect yourself from the elements (hat, sunscreen, umbrella, jacket, etc.) and care for yourself (snacks, water, medications, etc.).

Explore how to accurately render a variety of tree forms and the texture of foliage while expressing each tree’s unique character. Working from both photos and plein air, as weather permits, we will learn the basic skills of interpreting light and shadow to render volumes in space and gain an understanding of the dynamic structure of arboreal forms.
