Weeklong Workshop

Alla Prima Figure and Portrait Painting with a Limited Palette – Dominique Medici
Monday-Friday| 1/6-1/10 | 9:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M.

The most efficient way to simultaneously develop observation and intuition is to practice Alla Prima painting. Gaining the ability to work quickly, and with precision, is key in your development as a painter. The time restraint forces you to forego detail, see the big picture, and focus on gesture and large masses, the elements which ultimately hold the power and personality within a portrait or figure painting. In this workshop, we will work with a systematic and disciplined technique that is uniquely designed to achieve this aim.

Your instructor will provide frequent demos, breaking down the process of painting into clear and consecutive steps. We will focus on 4 main aspects: Proportion, Value, Color, and Edge, which will help us to accurately capture a likeness within a limited time frame. Since simplicity is one of our goals, we will be using a limited palette — a limited palette of only 7 colors; Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Red, Cobalt Teal, Ultramarine and Ivory Black. This palette is very dynamic and will refine our understanding of color relationships. Practicing this way will help to sharpen your observation, and take your skill to a new level.

Old Master series: The Venetian Technique – Hamid Zavareei
Monday | 1/13-3/16| 6:30-9:30 P.M.

The general approach of the Venetian masters such as Titian, Veronese and Tintoretto at the height of the Renaissance has come to be known as the Venetian Technique. What characterizes the Venetian technique is a departure from the Florentine tradition which was prevalent and dominant in the High Renaissance. The main distinction between the two schools of painting is what is known as “colorito” versus “Disegno” where the sensual application of paint with expressive quality takes precedence over carefully designed stage of painting central to the Florentine tradition. The resonance and influence of The Venetian approach has stretched throughout the centuries leaving its mark on every master up to this day. The Baroque masters including Rembrandt, Rubens, Velasquez, and beyond to the French Academy and German expressionism partake of the influence of the Venetian masters. This class is an exploration of the Venetian tradition from the initial Imprimatura and developing the underpainting, working up the layers of scumbles with emphasis on paint application and glazes to the final touches and highlights.
