Expressive Watercolor Portraits
with Willow Heath

Tuesdays | May 18 – Jun 15 | 9:30am-11:30am

Are you fascinated by the idea of painting portraits, but nervous about doing it in a media as potentially unforgiving as watercolor?  Successful watercolor portraits combine energy and spontaneity with a strong image of the portrait subject.  Watercolor expert Willow Heath takes the mystery out of the process, with weekly demonstrations clearly showing you how to start, render, and finish your portrait.  Her method begins with loose, more expressive brushstrokes, and finishes with more controlled, layered paint.  Along the way you will learn the basics of handling the attractive and challenging medium of watercolor, the most portable and convenient of all our art materials.

Telling Stories With Images
with Daniel Duford

Thursdays | May 20 – Jun 17 | 1:30pm-4:30pm

This class is a mixed level course from intermediate to advanced. The class would look at different storytelling strategies from comics to suites of images to illustrated essays. The first half of the class would use short exercises to explore different media and strengths and weaknesses of each strategy. Students would then propose and develop a short project that uses pictures to tell stories. The heart of these classes is visual storytelling. This course capitalizes on the centrality of stories to shape understanding. Facts and statistics have the most power in the context of stories. The combination of images and words is perhaps a person’s most persuasive and powerful tool. Even if a student comes to class without a story in mind to tell we can draw from a well of folk stories.

As this is a studio class we will look at a lot of art work from many different times and cultures and we will draw all the time. We learn through doing. How as an artist do you generate new images? How can you trick yourself out of old habits to find new material? This course connects everyone’s innate creative spark with storytelling and straightforward drawing exercises. Oral storytelling, themed readings and image making exercises are braided together throughout the session.

Flora and Fauna
with Kristin Frost

Fridays | May 21 – Jun 18 | 9:30am-12:30pm

Learn to paint the flora and fauna of the natural world in this relaxed and exciting watercolor and mixed media class. Each week will highlight a new organic theme, including flowers, plants, birds, mammals, and sea life. Just as each of these natural subjects has its own individual qualities, so we will explore using different techniques to render them.  Certain textures are best portrayed with a combination of watercolor and colored pencil, while others benefit from laying down carefully shaped, individual marks. Along the way you will also learn about glazing and color mixing, while closely observing the fascinating and beautiful forms of nature’s architecture.

A Study of Extremes: Hellenistic Sculpture and Its Influence with Susan Brangers

Fridays | May 21 – Jun 18 | 9:30am-11:00am

The Hellenistic period of Greek art saw a shift from Classical sculpture’s serene perfection to studies of the extremes of human nature—of age, emotions, and desires. The discovery of Hellenistic sculpture in Rome during the Renaissance introduced new possibilities for depicting the figure in painting and sculpture. In this class, we will examine Hellenistic sculpture, its qualities, and its influence on later painters and sculptors, especially Michelangelo.
