Fall 2019 Sculpting Programs

Morning

Sculpting the Human Face – Mardie Rees
Saturday | 10/5-10/26 | 9:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M.

Learn to sculpt the portrait and capture likeness and personality in clay. Students will learn to sculpt a full scale portrait in water clay on a fixed armature, while working from a live model. Students will begin by first massing-in the shape of the skull, and learn how to progresively incorporate facial features in relation to this structure. Instruction will include introduction to tools and techniques, proportions, structural anatomy, and learning to closely observe the nuances of the human face, demos, lectures, and individual feedback throughout the class. By the end of the course, each student will have created one portrait from a live model.

Afternoon

Ecorche Skull – Mike Magrath
Tuesday | 9/17-11/19 | 1:30-4:30 P.M.

Ecorché (Fr.: “flayed”) is the term used to describe a figure viewed without skin for the purpose of anatomical study and artistic reference, an experience requisite for the serious figure artist. Under the guidance of your instructor and from lectures and reference materials, you will build a life-sized anatomically precise 3-D model of the human skull with its attendant muscular system in clay. You will emerge with a durable reference figure and irreplaceable anatomical expertise. Prior experience in figure sculpture is recommended, however students with strong experience in long-pose figure drawing may find they have many of the requisite skills. Price includes materials.

Gestural Sculpting & Drawing the Figure – Mardie Rees
Saturday-Sunday| 12/14-12/15 | 9:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M.

Capture the human figure in motion with award-winning and internationally recognized artist Mardie Rees. We will capture the gesture using line drawings and then by modeling the figure three-dimensionally. Focus is on gesture drawing and learning to sketch poses in clay by breaking down and re-building a new gesture during each class. By analyzing the figure both through drawing and gestural sculpture, students will come away with a unique approach to working from life and will be able to make more compelling works.
