At Gage Academy of Art, we strive to ensure children and teens have a fun, safe, and creative learning environment to help them make the most of their summer. With our roster of top-notch youth instructors, we offer both in-person and online camps to fit your family’s needs. From traditional painting and drawing to digital storytelling and character creation, your child will have the opportunity to thrive in a Gage summer camp!

Kids Camps
Ages 6-11

In-Person Camps: Limited registration, social distancing, state mandated building cleanliness standards, and required mask wearing ensure a safe environment for kids to explore their creativity. For an additional fee, Gage offers its before and after Creative Care program by week or by day if paid at the door. Find the creative care link next to your favorite program below!

Online Camps: When kids register for one of our fantastic online kid’s camps, they will gain access to one of 9 different movement video sets for the whole summer! These fun energetic videos are produced especially for Gage kids by our terrific instructor, Sayen Lentini! Don’t forget that all Gage online kid’s registrations have the opportunity to pick up an art pack with art stickers!

Giant Inflatable Sculpture +Tall as a Mountain Small as a Mouse

Creative:
This week, campers will draw inspiration from the challenges of social distancing in the creation of a giant inflatable companion that occupies the 6’ we now maintain between one another. These sculptures will further be incorporated into this week’s movement section in a fun and floaty final performance.
Movement:
This class we will look to nature and play with the ideas of expansion and retreat, motion and stillness. Using yoga and mindfulness to discover new worlds in and around us, great and small!

KA-POW! COMIX

Creative: Panel-by-panel and step-by-step we’ll dive into the wild world of comic making, combining words and pictures to create explosive action, high drama, and gut-busting giggles. By the end, each student will be lead writer, director and designer in their own three-page comic.

A World of One’s Own + Dreaming in Motion

Creative:
Drawing on the “small as a mouse, big as a mountain” theme, students will construct their own tiny worlds within a fort made from a giant appliance box. Using polymer clay and cut paper, we’ll embrace the importance of maintaining and establishing our own unique and individual spaces from which to view the world.
Movement:
Fueled by fantasy and imagery, students will explore storytelling through movement. We will draw on inspiration from embodying characters, emotions, and fantastic landscapes to create a dreamy piece of choreography

Art Inspired by Hispanic Artists
with Dovey Martinez

Online Camp
Creative: Hispanic art is just as diverse as its people. Throughout the History of art, Hispanic artists have been unafraid of taking risks, making a statement, and inspiring others. Artists such as Frida Khalo and Jean Michel Basquiat used art as a way to share and inspire change. Salvador Dali and Joan Miro are two artists that worked with painting and sculpture as well. Fernando botero is known for his unique signature style. Using paint, paper, and materials around the house we will explore the work of great Hispanic artists and create our own work inspired by their colorful styles and techniques.

Animal Stampede + Imagineers in Motion

Creative:
During this week, Gage campers will research and design a personalized animal costume of the species of their choosing, then create it using a variety of sculptural techniques. The week will conclude in a disruptive animal stampede throughout the historic Gage campus by students in their costumes.
Movement:
In this class we will explore our imaginations with yoga and qigong, discovering new ways to foster connectivity in these distant times. We will play with expression and story telling through movement!

Stop Motion Animation

Creative: Learn how to make your art move through the art of animation! In this course, we will practice the fundamentals of stop motion animation to create and share a short animated movie! We will use materials you can find at home and edit your animation on an iPad.

Bizzarro City + Dancing With Myself; Creating a Self Portrait With Movement

Creative:
What if the Seattle we call home was just one of infinite versions of the city? How would these alternate realities look different than our Seattle, and how would they be familiar? This and many other quantum speculations will guide this week’s camp in a collaborative installation that transforms a Gage classroom into a parallel mini-metropolis of our collective imagination, built with a variety of repurposed sculptural materials.
Movement:
Students create their own one to two minute self portrait individually through prompts, with movement vocabulary showcasing both technical and abstract aspects of dance.

ZINE-O-RAMA

Creative: Kids will join the great DIY zine tradition, exploring all sorts of non-fiction zine forms from how-tos and guides to fanzines and diary comics through drawing, writing, and collage. Students are encouraged to share their passions and celebrate each other’s unique perspectives as they learn to effectively organize and transmit information in this low-cost, punk-rock format.

Food Art!

Learn how to draw, paint, and sculpt your favorite foods, using all kinds of techniques and materials. Experiment with mixed media, 3D design, wire frames, papier-mache, and more. Learn some food art history!
Students will curate a show of their favorite foods, arranging a presentation that pulls it all together deliciously.

Creative:
Creative experiments take wing as we explore the beauty of flight, drawing inspiration from nature and human innovation. Students will spend the week elaborating on all sorts of flying contraptions from paper airplanes and mobiles to kites, gliders, and candle-powered hot air balloons.
Movement:
Students will spend the week exploring creative pathways through space and broadening their movement horizons. We will playfully collaborate to choreograph a piece inspired by rhythm, travel, and imagination.

Students will learn about piñatas and piñata-esque traditions from around the globe as we construct our own crafty and colorful creatures from cardboard, paper and personal mementos. We’ll discuss the symbolic significance of the piñata and explore each artist’s personal connection to the concepts of triumph-over-evil, release, and celebration!

Creative:
Pranksters, Magicians, and all those inclined toward general trickiness are invited to this crash course in creating the unexpected and inexplicable through art. Using a variety of materials and techniques, we’ll delve into projects that stand alone as finished illusions while building a repertoire of techniques to give your future artistic endeavors more wows, whoahs, and whaaaaas.
Movement:
In this camp students will explore and compare a variety of children’s games that are played around the globe. Build cultural awareness and geography skills all week long.

Creative:
Learn about marine wildlife, nautical science, and pirate fashion! We’ll try different types of art-making, like painting, drawing, collage, and costume-making, all based around the world of the seas.
Movement:
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines acrobatics, music, history and philosophy. Played in circle “the game” of Capoeira is an improvised combination of grace movements, rituals and dance. Through this class students will develop body awareness and strength, music skills and interpersonal communication to build team work in a respectful, safe and fun environment.

Paper Mosaic Nature

Creative: What is mosaic art? Mosaic art is a picture or pattern produced by arranging small colored pieces together.
In this course, we will create outdoors in a unique way – through mosaic art! We’ll construct our own gardens using colorful paper cut into different shapes, which we will puzzle together to create a beautiful a garden of flowers and plants.

Creative Care
Gage offers a creative and structured environment as a before and after program care. You can pre-enroll by the week or pay by the day at the door! Find the creative care link next to your favorite kids program above!
AM session: 8:00am-9:30am
PM session: 3:30pm-5:00pm
FEES: $25 per day or $100 per week
Creative Care is not offered Friday afternoons.
Just like our camps, great care is taken to ensure the health and safety of the students, including social distancing, mask wearing and cleanliness of facilities.
Teen Camps
Ages 12-18

In-Person Camps: Limited registration, social distancing, state mandated building cleanliness standards, and required mask wearing ensure a safe environment for teens to explore their creativity.

Online Camps: Monday through Friday for two to three hours, depending on the camp. This time will be a combination of instructor demos, class discussions and time to work on projects with the instructor. Don’t forget that all Gage online youth registrations have the opportunity to pick up an art packet with special stickers! See our website for full camp descriptions.

Imaginative Digital Painting Bootcamp

This 1-week online program is the perfect way for teens to get their feet wet with digital art. For two hours each day, we’ll be exploring a variety of digital tools to get you drawing and painting imaginative characters, creatures and environments. The class will start with a crash course on digital painting fundamentals, then move into a new topic each day exploring strategies for developing your personal artistic voice.

In this class we will go over the basics of designing your own world! We will cover a wide range of topics, including character design, environment design, prop design, keyframes, and more. Drawing Intensive

Explore your creative side during an intensive two week drawing course. Investigate the uses of graphite, charcoal and color pencil to achieve your artistic intention. Improve skills with exercises designed to make ideas a reality by utilizing observation, photographs, and imagination.
Students will build their own worlds using linear perspective and bring them to life with light and shadow. Through the course, create multiple one of kind drawings expressing your unique vision. If you are a beginner with no drawing experience or draw all the time you will gain valuable insight into the creation of visual art.

Character Design

Whether you already love drawing your own unique characters, or you love making story-based art but can’t seem to design a cool enough character to match – there are tools to help you take those character art skills to the next level. In this workshop, we will learn about different key points crucial to making a successful character: shape language, costumes, color theory, poses, and polish. Each day we will both learn and apply these elements in a workshop-style class with teacher demos and draw-alongs. By the end of the course, you will have a completed character design and the knowledge for all your projects to come!

In this fully digital art class, we will use a shared online canvas to create large-scale collaborative drawings. Over the course of the week, we will draw a huge map, which we will populate with cities, characters, and stories. This is a great opportunity to improve your cartooning, character design, environmental design, and comics storytelling skills while drawing inspiration from your peers. Together, we will build a world you will never forget.

Learn the basics of painting during an intensive two weeks of exploring materials and techniques used in oil painting. Explore value and color through exercises working from life and develop personal style with exercises in brush handling.
Advance skills in identifying visual problems and learn the techniques to solve them. This course will provide a broad range of technique, from learning methodic, step-by-step.
Whether you are familiar with painting or have never picked up a brush, this intensive course will help build the skills needed to fulfill creative goals.

Bri is a comic and story artist living and teaching in the PNW. Having studied animation at UW and classical painting with Georgetown Atelier, she is always looking for ways to combine the new and old in her art. Currently, she teaches with Gage and has several upcoming courses this Spring: animation for adults and two comic-related classes for preteens.
