New York City Art Tour with Mark Kang-O’Higgins
Immerse yourself in the vibrant neighborhoods and destinations of Manhattan’s eclectic art scene, including guided stops at the Guggenheim, MoMA and the Met; and experience the artistic heartbeat of the Big Apple as you enjoy special access to masterworks at the City’s great museums, including entrée to special collections and studios.
The deep dive into the art scene of New York takes you into the city’s most hallowed art schools and galleries and to the studios of some of the country’s premier artists, with the opportunity to purchase work at a discounted price.
This is an unfiltered look at the artist’s life in NYC. Mark Kang O’Higgins has designed this tour to inform and educate you about the art world in New York and help demystify the NYC artist’s career path from beginner to professional.

Thursday, July 1 is the date students will move in to their apartments.
Workshop instruction begins on Friday, July 2 and will end on Friday, July 16, students will move out of their apartments on Saturday, July 17.
Students will have the weekends to themselves with the option for a day trip on Saturday, July 3.

Time during the workshop will be divided between drawing from the model in a classroom at our partner school SACI (Studio Arts College International), and drawing sculpture on site in museums. Outside of the classroom, students will have many opportunities to draw and sketch; copying sculptures in places like the Bargello, churches and museums. .
During the day your workshop will include visits to several churches, museums and other historic sites as a group including:
This museum has one of the largest collection of Italian Renaissance artwork anywhere including Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and many Botticelli works.
World famous art museum containing Michelangelo’s David, his four unfinished sculptures and many Italian Renaissance paintings.
A huge Franciscan church containing work by Giotto, Taddeo and Agnolo Gaddi, Donatello and the famous Pazzi Chapel designed by Brunelleschi. It also holds the tombs of Galileo and Michelangelo.
The sculpture museum of Florence with dozens of works by Donatello, including his famous David and also sculptures by Michelangelo.
The Pitti Palace
Enormous former villa of the Medici family which contains several museums and the famed Boboli Gardens. The painting gallery holds many important works including Raphaels, Caravaggio, Artemisia Gentileschi and Botticelli.
Museum filled with artwork formerly in the Duomo including work by Donatello (St. Mary Magdalene), Michelangelo (late Pieta), and Ghiberti’s original Gates of Paradise.
A museum and a monument, a place of memory and of celebration of the genius of Michelangelo housing his sculpture and drawings.

Mike Magrath has spent most of his life in the Pacific Northwest. He discovered figurative sculpture while in his early thirties, and has since dedicated his life to the betterment of his craft and the furtherance of sculptural art. Primarily self-taught, he has nonetheless studied and taught in a number of rich sculptural environments. He holds a BA from Reed College, an MFA from the University of Washington and studied sculpture at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy.
Magrath has taught sculpture and anatomy at Gage since 2004 and in 2014 founded the Magrath Sculpture Atelier. He has taught at other schools including the University of WA, Art Academy of London and Antioch University.
Magrath has received numerous commissions both private and public including from the City of Seattle, Microsoft and the UW and he has participated in a variety of solo and group exhibitions.
As an artist his primary focus lies in the embodiment and reinterpretation of mythology in contemporary contexts, and is most interested in its potential to reinvigorate the human spirit, particularly in the face of the cynicism of the modern world
