It has been such a pleasure working with this group over the past year! The works on view here represent our focus and engagement with the method of Color-Blocking. Students in my atelier learn to identify contrasts in value, temperature, and intensity through a series of exercises (master-studies, collages, color charts) and then apply those lessons to individual compositions. I believe that learning an articulate language for color liberates one to express a unique, visual poetry.

Pink and Green Shawna
Color pencil on paper, 9 x 12, $100
1st Year in Trowbridge Atelier
When I draw from the figure, I feel at such a liberty to experiment with emotional character though layers of vibrant, saturated color. In these drawings I work very fast, intuitively grabbing one color after another, layering pencil marks to build the image. I am aiming for an interesting mix of shapes made of optical tertiary colors and pure, “straight-outta-the-pencil” colors.

Witness/Worship (Weirdo)
Oil on oil paper, 16 x 20, NFS
1st Year in Trowbridge Atelier
This painting emerged from an assignment to paint a composition with rocks and cloth, and my own intention to increase the range of values in my paintings. Alongside attention to value, layering, and edge quality, I felt myself dropping further into the question of the mutual respect, range, and different capacities of light and dark, and the kind of inter-relationship that connects them while leaving each their own integrity.
Three Figures
Oil on oil paper, 12 x 16, NFS
1st Year in Trowbridge Atelier
This painting emerged from anger and frustration during an earlier model painting session. Starting with the two initial figures, I soon added a third, and approached the new painting through exploring the geometries and connections among their bodies and the space and forms around them. I also played with new textures and luminosities in paint handling and scraping.
Equisetum
Oil on oil paper, 12 x 16, NFS
1st Year in Trowbridge Atelier
This painting is inspired by horsetails and their exuberant growth rhythm. The style of paint application grew out of my process of making color charts – a meditative process in which I experience the world of each color, moving my brush in sensuous rhythms across each color square and feeling how their edges meet. Here I extended that process to the abstract shapes of the horsetails and the second wave of vegetation surrounding them.

This has been my second year with the Trowbridge Atelier, and this fall I will be starting graduate school at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. My paintings contain reflections on living in the wilderness, depicting scenes that are inspired by hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in 2016. I am interested in line, and how it can travel and link forms in a composition, color relationships, and variations in surface texture.
