Dive deep into the ancient art of painting on water and pull your own one of a kind, mesmerizing prints. This three day workshop gives historical context and hands on, step-by-step instructions so that by the end of the course, students will know how to make their own marbled paper in both the accessible Japanese tradition as well as the more involved Turkish tradition.
On the first day, students learn the art of suminigashi, the Japanese traditional technique of floating ink on water. After learning this new skill and pulling as many prints as they like, students learn how to prepare materials for Turkish marbling, a technique we see in books and stationary shops everywhere today. On the second day, students learn to marble using paint and thickened water on paper they have prepared with mordent the day before. They learn a variety of raking techniques, and build up their pulling skills. The final day the students play and pull some more until they are able to pull several large sheets of paper in their chosen pattern.
