Studio Concentration: Art & Innovation, Lessons in Seeing and Understanding Painting
– Charles Emerson

Mon – Tues | Aug 3 – Aug 24 | 9:30 P.M.-12:30 P.M.

Searching for An Additional Reality

This class is held on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout August.

An additional reality is a characteristic effect of a work of art. In some paintings we see and sense this immediately – others require intelligent observational skills to see and understand beyond an image or picture. We need to see beyond skillful representation in most contemporary painting relevant to our time. We start with Cezanne, most prominent among others, who taught us to see and appreciate more the fact of painting application as well as the interactions of all the elements whereby one and one make three or more. The sum greater than the parts. An intellectual exercise much like chess; aware of the board and all the possibilities inherent in the interaction of the pieces. Each looking seeing more. You will be guided through a series of exercises to be able to see and understand more of what is actually happening in your and other’s work as in Cubism or Abstract Expressionism. A final emphasis on Bay Area Abstraction Painting as an easier entry. Experience required, intermediate or advanced.

Instructor will meet with students in the morning and set up group and individual critiques throughout the workshop.

Painting Light and Color
– Devin Cecil-Wishing

Mon – Fri | Aug 10 – Aug 14 | 9:30 A.M.-1:30 P.M.

Whenever we are painting, regardless of the subject matter, what we are really painting is light. This workshop will take a “nuts and bolts” approach to understanding how light and color really work and also give students plenty of opportunities to practice putting the knowledge in to practice. In this course students will learn how to convincingly paint light and form in full color. Through a combination of quick color mixing exercises and simple still life paintings students will learn how to take the mystery out of color painting. Students will learn how to accurately mix color, how to avoid “dead” “muddy” or “chalky” color and most importantly, how to begin thinking of color not as a set of isolated pigments but rather as an interconnected series of relationships. This class will include in depth lectures and demonstrations by the instructor on the properties of color and the physics of light, as well as detailed demonstrations and explanations of how to approach each step of the painting process from beginning to end. In addition to learning about color and light, this course will serve as an opportunity for students to become familiar with each step of the process of creating finished paintings
