Start with the Basics! Introduction to Still Life Drawing with Gary Faigin

Sat, Sun, & Mon | Feb 13 – Feb 15 | 9:30am-12:30pm

In art, everything starts with the ability to draw and render simple shapes, like the egg, the lemon, and the wine bottle. In this introductory class, Gage co-founder Gary Faigin clearly explains how to accurately draw a set of simple household objects, lit by a side-mounted spotlight. Each day Faigin will demonstrate one of the basic tools artists employ in creating accurate and convincing drawings: mapping, rendering, and employing perspective to capture subject matter like books and vases with round tops. Student critiques will proceed in the same manner as a Gage studio class (everyone gets a critique once a session), and the materials list – charcoal and an 18” x 24 “ pad – is simple and inexpensive. An excellent class for a beginner or someone wanting to brush up on their skills.

Winter Wonders in Watercolor
with Kathleen McKeehen

Sat & Sun | Feb 20 – Feb 21 | 9:30am-4:30pm

Winter offers the botanical artist a selection of unique subjects, as they don’t wilt and change quickly as most plant materials do. Students are encouraged to select a subject of their choice from the many options, and while cones are perhaps the most challenging subject, even beginners can make good progress under the guidance of botanical illustrator and artist Kathleen McKeehen. Over the course of the two-day workshop, you will learn and practice various wash and dry-brush techniques leading towards an accurate and realistic depiction of your subject. Costs of materials can be minimized by purchasing small amounts of necessary paints and paper from instructor.

Design and Composition of a Contemporary Painting with Clive Smith

Fridays | Feb 26 – Mar 26 | 9:30am-4:30pm

Over a 5-week period, Clive Smith will work with you on how to take various elements — the figure, still life, interior and exterior space — and bring these elements together to create a painting. Either working from life or photographs, the workshop will show you how to incorporate early sketching ideas and photo/sketch collage into the design of a painting. If you have digital photoshop skills, he will work with you individually on how to use those skills in developing photomontages into the painting. Clive will show you the tools needed to tell stories in your work by bringing and thinking about different elements into a finished painting using both universal and personal concepts. The workshop will start with a group chat and presentation talking and showing how and why contemporary artists combine different elements of the world into their paintings. From this, students will either work from one of the presented artists concepts or from ideas and thoughts of their own to create paintings. Clive will then meet and work with each student over zoom once a week to discuss their progress, help set up their home studios and guide them through the different steps and techniques as they paint. Working once a week with Clive over 5 weeks vs a 5 consecutive day workshop will give each student the time needed in-between each session to build their painting layers and be able to have him answer questions that arise as they work. Each week, all the students will be invited to a group get together to show how their work is progressing so we feel still part of a class even though we will be working remotely.

Master Skin Tones in Oil with the Poster Sketch
with Patricia Watwood

Sat & Sun | Feb 27 – Feb 28 | 9:00am-4:00pm

This two-day workshop will teach the Poster Study, to understand the relationship of color and value mixing in skin tones and capture the “Key of the Light.” We will work with reference models—light, medium and dark, to understand the special qualities of various complexions. Color gets all the credit in vibrant painted skin, but value does all the work. You’ll learn how to get the most accurate and pleasing color notes, and understand Watwood’s palette colors and mixing tips. This workshop is well suited to all painting levels, and the information is useful to both an academic or expressive style artist. When you learn to see planes and the direction of the light, your expressive potential is your own. The instructor will share photo references, materials list and instruction info ahead of the workshop.

Expressive Flesh: The Figure in Oil
with Miguel Carter-Fisher

Mon – Fri | 6/21 – 6/25 | 9:30am-4:30pm

In this workshop, students will explore how paint viscosity, translucency, and texture can be used to enrich the expressive potential of their figurative paintings. We will discuss painting as the simultaneous expression of light and physical substance as we experiment with glazing, scumbling, brushes, and mediums. Both traditional and experimental techniques will be utilized. We will also discuss the relationship between form and subject matter as the genesis of content. At the end of the workshop, each student will have a work that reflects their own aesthetic interests.
