In Gage sculpting classes, students join eye with hand and begin to see that form and structure, in its richness and complexity, provide vital, underlying strength to good drawing and design. The transformative act of molding a physical substance into human form gives Gage students invaluable training in understanding proportion, balance, rhythm and movement in ways that two-dimensional studies cannot. Gage offers traditional and exploratory classes in figurative, ceramics and mixed media to artists interested in expanding their three-dimensional repertoire. Gage figure-sculpting classes include full-size figure sculpting and écorché to complement the classical training available at Gage.

BEGINNING SCULPTING CLASSES

S1012 | FIGURE SCULPTURE
8/3-8/31, Tuesday, 6:30pm-9:30pm
SUMMER SESSION B

Learn a clear and intuitive method to master the fundamentals of the human form in space. Whether you are a beginning or an advanced sculptor, an experienced painter or just beginning drawing, develop skills that will radically improve your ability to see and understand the figure in space. You work from the same pose for five weeks, with the pose also available in the independent Reserved Figure Studio on Thursday nights (ST1019) — allowing you up to ten sessions to develop your work.

S1013 | EXPRESSIVE FIGURE SCULPTING
8/6-9/3, Friday, 9:30am-12:30pm
SUMMER SESSION B

Explore the human figure through clay in this class focused on the process of building a sculpture. Beginning with sketches and constructing an armature, then continuing with discussion of bones, muscles and body proportions, you take your creation from a lump of clay to an animated portrayal of the model.

S1014 | BEGINNING FIGURE SCULPTURE
9/13-11/15, Monday, 9:30am-12:30pm

Learn to accurately represent human gesture, proportion, mass, structure and surface form in three dimensions. A building block of the Foundation Painting Program at Gage, this course offers sculpting students a comprehensive introduction to figure sculpture; while students of drawing and painting improve their dimensional depiction of the human form in space. We work from the same pose for the entire quarter, with the pose also available in the independent Sculpture Reserved Studio (ST1026) on Sunday mornings — allowing you up to 20 sessions to develop your work.

This class fulfills a Foundation Drawing Program requirement. Learn more about the Foundation Drawing, Painting and Modernism Programs.

S1016 | NEW! ANIMATING THE BUST
9/14-11/16, Tuesday, 9:30am-12:30pm

Working life size from two models, each for five weeks, you sculpt the model in an “extreme” gesture that conjures up a strong narrative. Whether the pose is a contorted crouch or stretching of the neck to see something way off, these busts are focused on animating the figure as well as the facial expression and bringing it to life. You work in solid clay on an armature tailored to fit each pose, cutting it apart and hollowing it at the end of each five-week period. Discussion, demonstrations and options are available as to how best to display the finished piece. Some clay experience is recommended.

S1017 | PORTRAIT AND TORSO MODELING
9/14-11/16, Tuesday, 1:30pm-4:30pm

The life-sized torso study is a critical step along the way to sculptural mastery and a seminal form in its own right. Pursuing strong modeling and subtle detail, you work from the model and other sources to more clearly understand the forms and rhythms of the body, make informed decisions about composition and framing while creating an object with a powerful sculptural presence. This course is ideal for more advanced students ready to break into work at scale, but accessible to students at all skill levels. Finished work will be suitable for casting or may be fired at Gage.

This class fulfills a Foundation Painting Program requirement. Learn more about the Foundation Drawing, Painting and Modernism Programs.

S1018 | THE ESSENCE OF ANIMALS
9/17-11/19, Friday, 9:30am-12:30pm

Learn clay-handling techniques as you work to create several finished and fired sculptures of animals. Along the way, you create maquettes, or small scale models, of your sculptures, clay sketches and finished pieces. Throughout the process of building, hollowing, firing and coloring, you pay special attention to form and surface texture, and gain an understanding of how bones, muscles and skin come together to best express the animal’s personality and form. Demonstrations and hands-on critiques augment the class.
