Drawing the Features of the Head

with Gary Faigin

Tuesdays, 7:00pm-8:30pm 4/22-5/27

Nothing is more emotionally compelling to observe than the human face. Magazines flaunt idealized facial beauty; Hollywood packages expressive faces for big-screen cinema; TV capitalizes on talking heads to give the facts and features of the day. Over six evenings, Faigin, author of the acclaimed The Artistís Complete Guide to Facial Expression, presents an animated discourse on the foundations of drawing the head. Drawing from models and showing slides, he guides you to a broader understanding of this fascinating subject.

Gage Guided Tours @ Portland Art Museum:
Venice: The Golden Age of Art and Music

With Tour Guides Juliette Aristides & Carol Hendricks
Friday, May 2

Join Atelier instructor Juliette Aristides and Art Historian Carol Hendricks for a tour of the beautiful exhibit Venice: The Golden Age of Art and Music at the Portland Art Museum. In addition to touring the exhibit, you will also tour the museumís permanent collection of important Old Master works and enjoy lunch in one of Portlandís great restaurants. Portland is the only U.S. venue for this incredible international exhibition. Between the early 16th century and the close of the 18th century, the great flourishing of the arts included innovative painters such as Titian, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Canaletto and Guardi, as well as composers Willaert, Gabrieli, Monteverdi and Vivaldi. This spectacular exhibition explores the important interrelationships of the visual arts and music in the cityís civic ceremonies, festivals and culture.

The group will start by meeting for lunch at noon where we will discuss the role of Venice in the Renaissance. Then we will head for the museum to look at the permanent collection before spending the afternoon at the special exhibit. Our group will finish our tour around 4:00pm. However the Portland Art Museum stays open until 8pm on Fridays and students are welcome to linger in the galleries until then.
