Drawing, now considered “retro-tech,” remains one of the most immediate means for analyzing, interpreting and imagining our world. At Gage, we relish our reputation as the regional school most committed to the merits of learning to draw from observation. Gage workshop instructors, both local and nationally-renowned artists, have mastered the art of drawing and are committed to encouraging artists to build their technical skills and develop their personal vision. Accordingly, Gage offers a wide range of intensive classical, expressive and abstract drawing workshops from one weekend to two weeks in duration.

INTERMEDIATE DRAWING

WA1022 | FIGURE DRAWING: AUX TROIS CRAYONS
11/29-12/3, Mon-Fri, 9:30am-4:30pm [5 days]

Drawings don’t have to play second fiddle to paintings. Working in three colors of chalk, you can create artworks that are spontaneous, colorist masterpieces that communicate the delicate qualities of light and shade on the human form.

During this five-day workshop, master draughtsman Flack conveys this painterly tradition of drawing ‘aux trois crayons’ on tinted paper with a variety of figure models in long poses. Flack focuses on how the figure’s highlights and shadows are translated into red (sanguine), black and white chalk on a typically cream background to create skin tones that have warmth and life, reminiscent of the Baroque drawings by Watteau, Boucher and Fragonard. As you develop your figure drawings, you learn how to use white chalk to describe crisp, precise highlights on your forms while the red adds a touch of warmth and the black gives your renderings a rich, dark quality to the shadow areas.

In addition to daily demonstrations on describing the figure in multiple colors, Flack includes demonstrations of various means to tone your papers with pigments and binders that create an evocative background of your figure compositions. This workshop is suited to artists who already understand tonal figure drawing.

WA1024 | MASTERING FACIAL EXPRESSION
12/6-12/10, Mon-Fri, 9:30am-4:30pm [5 days]

This unique workshop, taught by the author of the classic reference book The Artist’s Complete Guide to Facial Expression, offers you the opportunity to explore the subtle mechanics of the human face. Using your own face as a model, Faigin leads you through a methodical exploration of the muscles, movements and expressions of the face as you work in charcoal. Toward the end of the week, you also work from an actor/model as you begin the transition from depicting your own expressions to depicting the same expressions on the faces of others. Faigin also discusses cartoons, master paintings and other artistic depictions of the face in action to further your understanding of the basics of emotion as expressed on the face.

WA1103 | PORTRAIT DRAWING
1/3-1/7, Mon-Fri, 9:30am-4:30pm [5 days]

You learn the visual principles essential to successful portrait drawings direct observation of the figure and the human skull. You build individual problem solving skills by examining the function of light and form. Working with various drawing media, including soft drawing media (Conte, charcoal pencil and compressed charcoal) on large sheets of paper (including colored paper), and from different points of view, you work from live models.
