Fans of the Gage Academy of Art annual art marathon, the DRAWING JAM, are in luck --- this year we're hosting a special presentation of the DRAWING JAM in the Visual Arts Section of Bumbershoot on Labor Day weekend, Saturday, August 30 through Monday, September 1.

From 11:00am to 8:00pm daily in the Lopez Room at the Seattle Center, Gage will offer a taste of the art school experience complete with figure models, "Stars of Bumbershoot," professional artist demonstrations, musicians, dancers and, of course, free art supplies!

BONUS! Friday, August 29 is free!

Friday is a free preview day of the Visual Arts section of Bumbershoot --- don't miss your chance to join Gage at the Seattle Center for this free glimpse of the Bumbershoot Drawing Jam!

The day starts at noon and lasts until 8 p.m. Stop by to draw from the model, both long poses (lasting one to two hours) and gesture poses (short and movement-based). Or check out artist demos by Gage Artistic Director Gary Faigin and fascinating still-life artist John Rizzotto.

Artist Demos

Friday, August 29

Gary Faigin
Noon to 3 p.m.
Portrait/Figure Demonstration

Gage Artistic Director and KUOW art critic Gary Faigin draws from the model, demonstrating the notable Gage classical tradition of art training. Faigin’s bold still life work and expressive portraiture have earned him exhibitions at Frye Art Museum, Woodside/Braseth Gallery and Coos Art Museum.

John Rizzotto
3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Still Life Demonstration

Rizzotto, a contemporary American realist painter, works in the still-life tradition but with contemporary sensibilities. Straying — and playing off of — the traditional, Rizzotto explores the endless possibilities of composition using still-life objects as varied as human skulls, gourds, busts and lawn ornaments.

Saturday, August 30

Eric Elliott
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Portrait/Figure Demonstration

Seattle artist Eric Elliott teaches extensively at Gage — most notably focused on figure and portrait drawing. Elliott’s own subdued, yet striking, work has been on show all around Seattle, including at James Harris Gallery and Jacob Lawrence Gallery.

Gary Faigin
2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Barbara Fugate
5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Portrait/Figure Demonstration

Fugate’s expressive drawings in charcoal, ink wash and pastel focus on portraying the figure with expression, boldly and dynamically. Gesture drawing, often larger than life, is her specialty. Her recent exhibition at Gage Academy of Art — drawn directly on the walls of the Steele Gallery — is a testament of her energy and skill.

Sunday, August 31

Gretchen Leggitt
11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Portrait/Figure Demonstration

A youth instructor at Gage Academy of Art, Leggitt has taught a variety of subjects — including drawing, painting and collage — to youth of all ages in Seattle and Colorado. A painter in her own right, Leggitt will display her artistic skills at Bumbershoot.

John Rizzotto

Monday, September 1

Matt Buckner
Noon to 4 p.m.
Sculpting Demonstration

Buckner will sculpt from the model in this day focused on demonstrating the art of clay sculpting. Buckner’s technical facility for executing work in plaster, wood, ceramics and metal is extensive, and has gained him many commissions, awards and exhibitions.

Mike Magrath
4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sculpting Demonstration

Magrath will sculpt from the model in this day focused on demonstrating the art of clay sculpting. Magrath’s notable sculpture work includes the public art project “Lot’s Tribe, Salt Witnesses,” a series of life-size sculptures cast in salt and erected in Occidental Park depicting Iraqi men and boys as a memorial to unacknowledged victims of 9/11.
