In conjunction with Gage’s historic move to South Lake Union in the summer of 2024 we are excited to announce the Sculpture program’s relocation to Georgetown's Equinox Community. This provides the Magrath Atelier and Gage Sculpture a once in a generation opportunity to serve our community as a multifaceted and interdisciplinary training program for the advancement of figurative sculpture, unique in the region.
Case for Support
Sculpture at Gage has been housed for the past 20 years in a small classroom at the end of the first floor on Capitol Hill. The heart of this program for 10 years has been the Magrath Sculpture Atelier, a part-time, multi-year figure sculpture intensive. In considering the move to SLU, it became immediately apparent that sculpture programs, with their concomitant dust and noise, would not fit our new space in South Lake Union.
The new studio in the Equinox Factory allows the Magrath Sculpture Atelier to join the Georgetown, Flack Drawing, and Modern Color Ateliers, to create a greater and more fully functioning satellite campus; Gage South. Gage’s new “Studio C” is not only perfectly configured for our existing sculpture program, it offers us the chance to expand our offerings with new classes and an opportunity to learn from and collaborate with world-class artisans working in stone, metal and ceramics. These resources are rarely offered as a suite to any sculpture student in any program, let alone one outside a traditional University.
In contrast to other figurative sculpture programs in the US which primarily concentrate on modeling skills, the innovative program at the heart of the enriched Atelier offers a broader approach to sculpting. It encompasses training in various techniques such as stone carving, metalwork, and more. Moreover, it equips students with the essential tools and knowledge to launch successful careers as professional artists. Gage Sculpture will truly become unique in the region, and even the country.

Gage Academy of Art acknowledges the Coast Salish Peoples as the original inhabitants of this area and connecting waterways. We understand the land that Gage occupies is unceded territory and that today many Indigenous peoples live here and without their stewardship, we would not have access to this space. We honor the Coast Salish Peoples’ sovereignty, rights to self-determination, culture and ways of life. Since time immemorial, Indigenous peoples have called this territory their sacred land. We commit to learning, educating others and repairing the legacy of historically harmful relationships between non-Native and Native peoples in King County. In doing so, we will be honest, and recognize the experiences of Native peoples to include genocide, forced relocation, forced assimilation, and land theft. We also acknowledge Native peoples are survivors, present in today’s world, thriving. We encourage everyone here today to ask themselves: what can I do to support Indigenous communities?
In an effort to be transparent, Gage is contemplating this call to action and re-working how to best support Indigenous communities.
