Georgetown

Portrait Painting – Tony Ryder
Monday-Friday| 8/19-8/23 | 10:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.

Make a head and shoulders portrait beginning with a brush drawing on a toned ground. Then paint from dark to light: the realization of form through painting the effects of the light. This method is based on light direction, light and shadow, and the effect of tonal progression we see on rounded form, proceeding from dark to light. It entails painting sectionally, from dark to light, first painting a base progression, and then into this wet base, brushing in our lights by placing other, lighter brushstrokes, thus topping out and illuminating our forms. This method is also called Form Painting because of the tangible way it expresses form by the actions of light.

Ginsburg’s teaching method will direct students to paint the unique realities of each model. “We will paint what we see, not what we know” (Charles Webster Hawthorn) to capture the poetic beauty of the reality, not some formula.Ginsburg will discuss concepts, expression of concepts, contemporary realism, and the painting of the Old Masters. This Studio Concentration will cover: Head Studies, Figure Studies, the Portrait, Painting the Figure, and a Multi-Figure Composition from life with two models, for which Ginsburg is renowned and highly regarded.Ginsburg will critique each student every day and give painting demonstrations. He will also paint half of each session on his own painting. Max believes that this is an excellent teaching tool, better in many ways than relying only on what the teacher says.

Printmaking Techniques: Monotype – Klara Glosova
Saturday-Sunday | 8/3-8/4 | 9:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M.

This class is an introduction to monotype. Monotype is a basic printmaking technique with which artists draw, paint, use stencils, and otherwise manipulate the smooth surface of a printing plate (typically acrylic or copper) to create an image which is then transferred onto a sheet of paper by pressing the two together. Monotype produces a unique print, it is a versatile medium closest to painting. Monotype doesn’t require special chemicals and extensive technical knowledge, it is therefore one of the most accessible printmaking techniques. Recommended for those who want to explore printmaking or painters looking to learn more about breakdown and structure of images (such as color and composition).

Printmaking Techniques: Reliefs – Klara Glosova
Saturday-Sunday | 8/24-8/25 | 9:30 A.M.-4:30 P.M.

This class is an introduction to linocut. Linocut is a basic printmaking technique in which artists use tools to carve marks into the surface of a plate. Like woodcut, linocut is a reductive method: the final image is produces by removing negative areas. Linocut produces results similar to woodcut except plates are made of soft rubber or linoleum, therefore easier to carve. Students will learn how to produce both single color and multi-color prints, foe which the process requires breaking down the image into a sequence of steps corresponding to each color. Starting with an idea, a drawing or a photograph, you will learn to analyze and deconstruct images in order to put them back together to produce linocut prints.
