Vicki’s Juror Statement:
I picked works of art for different reasons or a combination of reasons including technical achievement, exciting or subdued color, subtlety of emotion, compositional strength, and surprise.
I would like to have cited more artists. To all artists—keep doing what you love. One person’s views are just that.
This Year’s Best of Gage Winner
Aislynn Underwood, Self Portrait, Oil, 2020
This self-portrait became Best of Gage for many of these traits—subtle colors that distinguish flesh and hair from from abstract patterns; an enigmatic, somewhat distrusting, sidelong expression; a tense hand that moves skin into darkness; and attributes that emphasize the senses—earphones that muffle sound, lips that barely part, and eyes encircled by black glasses. This last focuses my thoughts on vision, the artist’s primary tool.
